How to do SEO when AI answers are changing search

Cover image · replace with photography

People used to type a question into Google and click one of ten links. Today many searches end with a short AI summary, and some end with no click at all. You can still get customers from search, but the way you earn them has changed.

This guide explains what to keep doing, what to stop and what to start. It is written for business owners, not SEO experts.

Rankings still matter, but they are not the whole story

Your page can rank well and still lose the click if an AI answer sits above it. So we now look at more than your position on Google.

  • Track groups of related searches, not single keywords.
  • Watch searches for your business name and direct visits. They show that people remember you.
  • Measure enquiries and sales from search, not only visits.

Write for the question, not just the keyword

People now ask full questions, such as “which SEO company is good for a clinic in Mangalore?” Pages that answer a question clearly in the first paragraph are more likely to be chosen, by Google and by AI tools.

If you cannot explain what a page is for in one sentence, neither can Google.Initme

Put the answer first. Add details, examples and proof underneath. This helps readers and gives AI tools a clean passage to quote.

Make your website easy for Google to read

Keep the structure clear

Use one topic per page, clear headings and links that say where they lead. Our technical SEO service covers this in detail.

Add structured data

Structured data tells search engines your business name, address, services and reviews. Only mark up what is really on the page.

Keep the site fast

Slow pages lose visitors and rankings. Check your speed on a phone, not just on a computer.

Get mentioned on other websites

AI tools and Google trust businesses that other sites mention. Three things help most:

  1. Original information that others want to quote, such as your own survey or price guide.
  2. Named experts with real experience writing your content.
  3. Your business listed the same way on trusted directories and local sites.

Be useful, be clear and be original.

What to do this quarter

  1. Check your 20 most important pages. Does each one answer a question in the first paragraph?
  2. Fix basic technical problems: indexing, speed, duplicate pages and structured data.
  3. Pick three topics you can cover better than anyone nearby and write about them in depth.
  4. Report on enquiries from search, not only traffic.
